Girls Talk Math @ UMN!

Girls Talk Math is a FREE summer day camp that was founded in 2016 at the University of North Carolina. This year we are bringing camp to the University of Minnesota for the first time! The program is available to rising 9th through 12th graders in the Twin Cities area who identify as girls or an under represented gender and are interested in exploring challenging math problems that go beyond the high school curriculum. Campers will share their learnings through media such as a blogposts and podcasts. Please check our main website for additional information: https://girlstalkmath.com/

Camp Goals

  • Make advanced mathematics accessible to students of underrepresented genders in STEM.

  • Facilitate group work to tackle challenging problems.

  • Learn how to effectively communicate.

  • Research and learn about the work of women who have made significant contributions to mathematics so that campers see their own potential to have careers in mathematics/STEM.

  • Increase confidence by giving students a voice and a platform to be heard through blogging and creating a podcast series about women in mathematics. See media previous campers have created here and here.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will camp take place?

Due to public health concerns surrounding COVID-19, camp will run virtually from July 6 - August 2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for about 2 hours each day (exact times TBD). Additionally, there will be special events on Saturdays such as panels and interviews with women mathematicians. Campers must have access to a computer/tablet with audio and an internet connection.

How do I apply?

Any rising 9th-12th grader who identifies as a girl or under represented gender can apply by completing this online application form. For full consideration, please complete the form by June 15. We ask that the application is filled out by the campers, with particular emphasis on the "Interest and About Me" paragraph.

I like math, but it isn't my strongest subject. Should I still apply?

Yes! This camp is for students who are curious about mathematics and want to explore more advanced math topics in a fun, supportive environment. Anyone who enjoys math or wants to learn more about the different types of mathematics that exist beyond the high school curriculum is encouraged to apply!

Who can I contact if I have more questions?

You may contact the UMN Center for Educational Programs by email at mathcep@umn.edu or the director of the camp, Anila Yadavalli, at anilayad@umn.edu.

Statement of Inclusivity

Girls Talk Math supports equity and inclusivity in mathematics by creating a learning community that is welcoming to all. We especially encourage students who identify with groups traditionally underrepresented or underserved in mathematics to participate. This includes those from underrepresented ethnic groups, nationalities, religions, citizenship status, socio-economic status, those who have moved schools multiple times, those from U.S. territories, those with disabilities, and those of underrepresented gender identities and sexual orientation. In particular, we acknowledge that gender identity is a spectrum and invite all those whose gender is underrepresented in mathematics to participate.
